Marriott Bonvoy Explained: The Best Collections and Where They Fit

One Loyalty Program, 40 Different Personalities

Marriott Bonvoy encompasses 40 brands and 9,900+ properties across 146 countries — the industry's largest portfolio. Understanding the tier structure matters more than memorizing brand names: Marriott splits everything into Luxury, Premium, Select, Longer Stays, and Collections.

Luxury Tier

The Ritz-Carlton, Ritz-Carlton Reserve, St. Regis, JW Marriott, W Hotels, and EDITION — all covered individually elsewhere in this series. This is the tier that competes directly with Four Seasons and Aman.

The Luxury Collection

Not to be confused with the Luxury tier itself — this is a separate "Collections" brand: 110+ independently characterful properties across 40 countries, each chosen for once-in-a-lifetime distinctiveness rather than brand consistency. North Island in the Seychelles (a private island) and Al Maha in Dubai (desert dune driving, camel riding) exemplify the range — this is where Marriott houses properties too singular to fit a standardized brand.

Design Hotels & Autograph Collection

Both are curated "boutique within a giant portfolio" plays — independently owned properties that opt into Bonvoy's loyalty program and booking engine while keeping their own architectural and design identity intact.

The Bvlgari Angle

Bvlgari Hotels, a Marriott joint venture since 2011, sits adjacent to this structure — Milan, Dubai, Bali, Tokyo, with Rome, Miami Beach, and Los Angeles added recently. The Bvlgari Milan, in a converted 18th-century mansion, remains the flagship.

Why This Matters for Trip Planning

Points aside, the tier structure is a genuinely useful filter: if you want brand consistency and predictable service standards, stay in the Luxury tier brands; if you want a property that could only exist in that specific place, look at The Luxury Collection or Design Hotels first.
