LA County's Coast Changes Character Every Few Miles
Installment three of the California coast series. From Huntington Beach north through Malibu, this stretch swings from working-class surf culture to bohemian street scene to genuine celebrity seclusion — often within a 20-minute drive of each other.
Huntington Beach
The West Coast's surfing capital — 15+ kilometers of sand, an International Surfing Museum, and the actual birthplace of California surf-brand culture (Vans and Hollister both trace roots here). Working-class and eclectic rather than polished; the crowd came for the waves, not the scene.
Hermosa & Manhattan Beach
The South Bay's long-running rivalry — beach volleyball's alleged birthplace, with pro teams split between training in Hermosa and Manhattan depending on the year. Redondo Beach, just south, is the most family-friendly South Bay option thanks to the Seaside Lagoon, a wave-free saltwater pool with waterslides.
Long Beach & Naples
The most underrated stretch in this entire list — calmer, less touristed than Santa Monica or Venice, with Rosie's Dog Beach giving the area a distinctly relaxed, unpretentious character. Naples, the canal-lined neighborhood within Long Beach, adds a genuinely unique Venetian-inspired residential register few visitors expect.
Santa Monica & Venice
Santa Monica is LA's most crowded, most touristed beach — Route 66's endpoint, the pier, the carousel — polished and social. Venice, just south, runs entirely differently: bohemian, street-performer energy, the most distinctly "unlike anywhere else in LA" stretch of this coast. Families with young kids generally prefer Santa Monica's calmer register over Venice's carnival atmosphere.
Marina del Rey
Tucked between Venice and the Palisades, oriented around the marina rather than open beach — quieter, boat-culture focused, a genuine contrast to Venice's street energy just next door.
Malibu
Wilder and more dramatic than anything south of it — Zuma Beach has the area's cleanest, most consistently rated water, while downtown Malibu's beaches run more polluted and harder to park at. This is the celebrity-hideaway register: fewer crowds, more coastal drama, a genuinely different pace from Santa Monica or Venice just down the highway.
